Our Program
When I look at the picture of this white calf (which was produced by this mating) it really sums things up for us. It was probably born in the 70-80# lb. range, and more than likely 650+ lbs. here at weaning. It came from a cow I would venture to say is around 1,300 lbs. and the sire probably around 1,900 lbs. These pictures were taken back in 1964 and out there on the short grassy ranges up in Canada (the Remitall herd).
In utilizing these older genetics however, it's important to have "quality control" and be disciplined in selecting for udders, feet/legs, docility, fertility and so on . . . and not loose any maternal traits. . . or performance.
So we've purchased a few females to serve as our foundation, and have now included some flushing of donor cows from other herds. Once we've acquired a "select variety" of breeding stock, we'd like to close the herd off and focus on a series of our own line breeding.
So far, we've been very happy with the use of older genetics and really enjoy the heterocyst we're achieving!
1/2 Doz.) Select "line bred" Shorthorn cows with proven performance.
1/2 Doz.) Select Shorthorn cows in utilizing older genetics.
1/2 Doz.) Select Shorthorn bulls (and semen from the 1960's - early 1970's)
• Carefully blend the above ingredients to a "desired consistency" through selective line breeding over the next 10 -to- 20 years.
• Serve to others when "ready".
